Going Back to School as an Adult: Tips for Adult Learners
By Jillianne Hamilton, myUsearch.com

Loads of laundry, running your kids to softball practice... and studying for an exam? Believe it or not, being both a parent and a student is possible.

Thousands of adults decide to go back to school each year and most of them are facing many of the challenges that might be keeping you from making the jump. Here are a few tips to help you overcome the obstacles keeping you from getting a degree, going back to college or just enriching your life:

  1. Worried you aren't tech savvy enough? If you aren't up on basic technology, you might consider taking some online classes (or getting your teenage nephew to teach you). You should be able to surf the Internet and finds things online with ease as well as use email and Micosoft Word.
  2. Make sure your partner and/or children understand your educational goals and why you want to complete a degree. They should understand that you might not always be around to make dinner or help with homework. Teaching them how to do laundry or make their school lunch will make it easier on both of you.
  3. Find out more about your educational options. Maybe one school has a lower tuition but another offers a health plan? When and for how many hours per day are classes and are those hours flexible? Which colleges offer daycare? These are just some of the questions you may to look into having answered before choosing a degree
  4. Consider a community college. While most universities are filled with students freshly plucked from high school, community colleges usually have more mature students who are looking to get a degree faster. And bonus -- lower tuition fees!
  5. Consider an online degree. If you just can't see yourself in a classroom setting, you may want to consider distance education. Do your research before choosing an online degree since not all online institutions are accredited and make sure you understand the difference between Regional and National accreditation.
  6. Don't forget about your basic needs if you decide to go back to school. Your schedule is going to be pretty busy. When managing college and life, it's easy to neglect sleep, exercise and diet. However, not taking care of yourself will just make your life that much more hectic.
