Parenting and Going to College
By Jillianne Hamilton, student blogger for myUsearch.com

Parenting is a full-time job in itself. But some parents are finding a way to work full-time, go back to school and still play the part of Mom or Dad. Here are some helpful tips to consider if you are a parent searching for college.

  1. Look for a school with flexible hours. Especially if you plan on working while in college, you will need to find a college with a flexible schedule. Many career colleges, continuing education programs, executive programs and community colleges offer flexible course schedules, and don’t forget -- you can earn your college degree on your own time with an online degree.
  2. College daycare facilities. Many colleges are now offering reasonably-priced childcare for parents going to school. When choosing a college, make sure to consider whether your college offers daycare or whether there is childcare near your college.
  3. Online education. If you can't see yourself back in a classroom setting, online degree programs can be good options for parents. Online degree programs are great for parents because they allow parents to attend class from home and earn a degree on their own schedule. Many employers now value an online degree  much more than they did in the past, and online students tend to be more mature.
  4. Family support. Make sure your partner and/or children understand why you want to earn a degree. They should understand you might not always be around to make dinner or help with homework. Teaching them how to do laundry or make their school lunch will make it easier on both of you.
  5. Manage your time wisely and be organized. Parenting while going to college is going to be a little hectic. To balance work, family and getting a degree, you’ll have to stay organized. Set up a desk where you can do your homework without being disturbed. Set aside "quiet time" for studying. Keep a day planner.
