October 31st is a time for magic. And no, we don’t just mean magic of the supernatural kind, involving witches, cauldrons, curses and spells. As well as being Halloween, October 31st is also World Magic Day, an annual celebration of illusions, tricks and close-up magic.
History of World Magic Day
The first World Magic Day was held in 1938. It came about thanks to Les Shotly, a member of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M). Shotly wanted an official day to honour the late Harry Houdini, world-famous illusionist and S.A.M. president. October 31st was chosen specifically, being the anniversary of Houdini’s death.
Originally, World Magic Day was marked with free magic shows for the less fortunate in America. However, over the years, World Magic Day celebrations have become bigger and more elaborate. In fact, in some places, people no longer just celebrate Magic Day; they enjoy a 7-day long Magic Week with free shows, tutorials, competitions and more.
